Grendel Attacks the Danes (Anastasia)
King Hrothgar is the ruler of Denmark during this time. A monster by the name of Grendel has tortured King Hrothgar and his subjects for 12 years. Herot Hall, the mead hall that King Hrothgar built was Grendel's main place of attack. Grendel would come in the night when the warriors were asleep in the hall and attack. King Hrothgar mourned his dead subjects for 12 years. Grendel could not touch King Hrothgar's throne, because it was protected by God Grendel's attacks were bloody and cruel.
The Coming of Beowulf (Anastasia)
Beowulf, a Geat and subject of King Higlac, traveled to Denmark with 14 of his other Geat warriors. He traveled by sea to get there in a deep-keeled ship. When he got there, the watchman gave Beowulf and his warriors a hard time because at this time the Geats and the Danes were enemies. Beowulf explains to the watchman that he and his warriors have come to end their misery and kill Grendel. The watchman then accepts Beowulf and takes him to see King Hrothgar. Beowulf then, respectfully asks King Hrothgar the permission to kill Grendel for him. During this story, Beowulf is convincing King Hrothgar to allow him to try and kill Grendel. King Hrothgar accepts Beowulf's offer.
The Battle with Grendel (Anastasia)
After King Hrothgar gives Beowulf permission to kill Grendel, Beowulf and his warriors sleep in Herot Hall that night. Like every other night, Grendel comes to the hall with the intentions of killing as many people as he can. The Geat warriors pretend to be sleeping when Grendel comes in. He kills one Geat warrior. Then walks over to Beowulf and tried to get a grasp on Beowulf, but when Beowulf gets a grip on Grendel and Grendel realizes that Beowulf is not ordinary. He realizes that Beowulf is super strong and becomes scared and tries to flee. Beowulf then tears off Grendel's arm. (Note that Beowulf does not use a sword, he uses his bare hands to defeat Grendel to show his superiority to King Hrothgar.) Grendel ends up escaping back to his swamp, but dies from blood loss. Beowulf hangs Grendel's arm in Herot Hall to show his victory and the Danes celebrate with the Geats in Herot Hall. The Danes then wait for Grendel's mom to come, and King Hrothgar does not tell Beowulf of Grendel's mother until after Beowulf kills Grendel.
The Battle with Grendel's Mother (Lauren)
The night after killing Grendel, Grendel's mother comes to Herot Hall seeking vengeance for her son's death. All the soldiers were sleeping at the time so Grendel's mother was able to kill Hrothgar's closest friend and steal her son's arm back. The next morning, Beowulf followed the tracks of the monster and jumped into the lake they came from and swam for about a day's time. When he finally reached the bottom, he met with Grendel's mother and she clutched at him but was not able to harm him because of his mail shirt. Beowulf used Hrunting but realized that no sword or weapon of his would be able to hurt her. Instead, he used his own strength for a while until he found the sword hanging in the hall and was able to use it to slay Grendel's mother because it was so large. Beowulf then returned to land and then back to Herot Hall to meet with Hrothgar.
The Battle with the Dragon (Lauren)
After defeating all the monsters in Denmark, Beowulf returned home to Geatland. The former kings Higlac and Herdred passed away and Beowulf ruled Geatland for 50 years. Then one day, a thief stole a gem-studded cup from a dragon guarding hidden treasure in a castle. The dragon was awoken and terrorized the land looking for the stolen cup and thief. Once Beowulf had heard of this issue, he went quickly with his soldiers to slay the dragon. He arrived at the tower and the dragon greeted him with his flaming breath. The dragon's hot breath melted Beowulf's shield and broke his sword. Beowulf was helpless and the only soldier to come to his aide was Wiglaf. Beowulf became even more helpless after he was struck in the neck by the dragon fangs. Wiglaf used the sword to hit the dragon with all his might and this stalled the dragon. Beowulf was then able to finish him off but cutting him in half. With the dragon now slayed, Beowulf handed his gold necklace, helmet, and mail shirt to Wiglaf along with the title of King of the Geats.
The Funeral Fire (Lauren)
The warriors built Beowulf's funeral fire along with the monument he requested overlooking the sea. The Geats all mourned the death of their beloved king and hero. Beowulf's ashes were placed inside the monument along with all the treasures recovered from the dragon's tower.
